| Nay, I swear by this city (Mecca) | 1 |
| and you are free in this city | 2 | وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ |
| and by the begetter (Adam as) and that which he begot | 3 | وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ |
| Indeed, we have created man in toil | 4 |
| Does he think that no one will have power over him?
| He says “I have squandered wealth in abundance” | 6 |
| Does he think that none sees him?
| Did we not make for him a pair of eyes? | 8 |
| and a tongue and a pair of lips?
| and shown him the two ways?
| but he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep | 11 | فَلَا اقْتَهَمَ العَقَبَةَ |
| and what will make you know the path that is steep?
| freeing of a neck | 13 | فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ |
| or giving food in a day of hunger | 14 | أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ |
| to an orphan near of kin | 15 | يَتِيْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ |
| or to a poor in severe need | 16 | أَوْ مِسْكِيْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ |
| then he became of those who believed and recommended to patience and recommended to mercy | 17 | ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ ءَامَنُوْا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالمَرْحَمَةِ |
| They are the companions of the right hand | 18 |
| but those who disbelieved in our signs they are the companions of the left hand | 19 | وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِئَايَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ المَشْئَمَةِ |
| the fire will be shut over them | 20 | عَلَيْهِم نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ |
