لَيْتَ
A word in the Arabic language will either be 1) a verb or 2) a noun or 3) a particle – لَيْتَ is a particle
May it be that, would that!
Particle of desire and expressing a wish impossible to be realized
| إِنَّ وَأَخَوَاتُهَا | حَرْفُ مُشَبِّهِ بِالْفِعْلِ | حَرْفُ نَصْبٍ | لَيْتَ | I hope | حَرْفٌ | حَرْفٌ لِلتَّمَنَّى |

| Surah/ | Below are the 14 verses in the holy Quran containing the accusative particle | لَيْتَ |
| Verse | ||
| and indeed, if befalls you a bounty from Allah (SWT) | وَلَئِنْ أَصَابَكُمْ فَضْلٌ مِّنَ اللهِ | |
| certainly, they would surely say as if not been between you and him any affection | لَيَقُوْلَنَّ كَأَنْ لَّمْ تَكُنْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ مَوَدَّةٌ | |
| 4-73 | “Oh! I wish I had been among them then I would have attained a great success” | يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوْزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيْمًا |
| and if you (could) see when they are made to stand by the fire | وَلَوْ تَرَى إِذْ وُقِفُوا عَلَى النَّارِ | |
| then they will say, “Would that we were sent back | فَقَالُوا يَا لَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ | |
| 6-27 | we will not deny the signs of our Lord and we would be of the believers” | وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِئَايَاتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ المُؤْمِنِيْنَ |

| Indeed, We warn you of a near punishment | إِنَّآ أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيْبًا | |
| the day when man will see what his hands have sent forth | يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ المَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ | |
| 78-40 | and the disbeliever will say, “woe to me! would that I be dust” | وَيَقُوْلُ الكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا |
| 89-24 | He will say “Alas would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for my life (hereafter) | يَقُوْلُ يَالَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى |
